There are many interesting and relaxing places to visit within easy reach of Sao Bras.

About 10 miles away is the elegant old market town of LOULE. There is a tiny museum in the centre and nearby is the famous market which sells mainly fruit and vegetables, but also meat, fish and nuts, and local crafts such as pottery and tablecloths, all very reasonably priced.

Around ten miles drive away just off the Faro road is the small town of ESTOI with the unusual Rococo Palacio de Estoi. This is due to be transformed into a pousada (hotel) and it is worthwhile wandering around the beautiful garden with its interesting sculptures and terraces. Nearby are the old Roman remains of Milreu.

FARO is well worth visiting with an attractive pedestrianised shopping area and most interesting walled old port with a large square edged with orange trees and a fascinating archaeological museum.

SAO BRAS DE ALPORTEL is a peaceful town, with local shops and cafes along the main road. Market day is on Saturday, when the town gets busy in the morning. There is an excellent supermarket, Intermarche, in S. Bras. It is located on the Tavira road leading out of the centre of S. Bras. You will see Louis dos Frangos restaurant on the right, and the turn to the supermarket is about ¼ mile further on the left. There are some smaller supermarkets in S. Bras, and also a few well-stocked small grocery stores and two bars in the little village of ALPORTEL, which is half a mile from the villa.

OLHAO has a large fish market on the coast. TAVIRA is on the coast in the Eastern Algarve towards Spain and is one of the region’s most historic cities and well worth a visit. It is a pretty place with attractive houses, churches, castle river and restaurants.

Within easy reach of Sao Bras are the coastal resorts of ALBUFEIRAVILAMOURA, where there is a yachting marina, QUARTEIRA, VAL DE LOBO, QUINTA DA LAGOPRAIA DE FARO and ST LUZIA. One of our favourite places is the small sandy beach at OLHOS DE AGUA which is just east of Albufeira. In Quarteira and Albufeira there are childrens’ amusement parks, with a large water park close to Quarteira.

Local Restaurants

There are several inexpensive restaurants in the S. Bras area. Here are a few that we currently recommend:

Louis dos Frangos – on the Tavira road from S. Bras – excellent chicken and chips – inexpensive. It is very popular so arrive by 7.30 p.m.

Savoy Restaurant – 300 yards from the main square in S. Bras on the Loulé road.

Ze Dias – turn right at the bottom of the Monte Casal hill. Continue along the road for a few miles, turning left near S. Romao and going downhill to the S. Bras – Loulé road. Turn right and the restaurant is immediately on the left. Excellent value for money; children are welcome.
